A Brief Campaign History
In the past, the party served as guardians, lead by the archmage Layla Chanadus, for the kingdom of Athar. They were very powerful soldiers that served the royal crown at that time, and they kept the lands safe from the evils of the world for many years. However, the success and prosperity of the kingdom of Athar created much jealousy and anger amongst the other peoples of the world. Many wanted such riches and power for themselves, and would stop at nothing to attain it. Leaders, chieftains, and kings from the surrounding nations met in order to come up with a solution for the downfall of Athar. Mages from these nations then worked together to open a rift to another plane of existence. This plane was controlled by the demon, and self proclaimed god of the undead, Kiaransalee. The plan was to open this rift over the kingdom of Athar and allow the creatures of the undead access to our world. Thousands of the undead poured through, and wreaked havoc on Athar. The guardians did their best to keep the hordes at bay, but knew that it was only a matter of time before their numbers were too great for even they to handle. Thus the king of Athar ordered the guardians to enter the rift and kill Kiaransalee. A major battle took place in the world of the undead between the guardians and Kiaransalee, a battle that was unfortunately lost. The guardians were beaten, captured and imprisoned within Kiaransalee’s stronghold. There the demon strived to turn the guardians into warriors for herself, but her attempts of “persuasion” proved futile. They were simply too strong, and too devoted to their lord and country for mere brainwashing. Kiaransalee knew that in order to make them hers, she must corrupt their very nature to do so. Through rounds of torture, mutilation, and magical transformations, she created a creature that mankind would come to fear, and in doing so, gave birth to the first of a new and terrifying breed humans call vampires. Kiaransalee released her new warriors back through the rift with the intent on leading the charge against the inhabitants of the world. Before her plan could be fully executed, celestial beings from the heavens eradicated the hordes of undead, and closed the rift between this world and Kiaransalee’s. The now corrupted guardians of Athar left the scene and traveled far away from the kingdom. With their new powers and lust for dominion, they steadily created an empire for themselves. The people they conquered became feeding grounds to a new population of vampires. With this craving for human blood, it became apparent to the party that overpopulation would create a major food shortage. Thus rules were set into place to prevent such a catastrophe, and allowed the population to grow at a steady but unalarming rate. The policy was not accepted without question. Feeding on animals and the like is not nearly as satisfying than feeding on more intelligent creatures. A major proponent against feeding regulation was Layla Chanadus. She believed that with widespread feeding on humans (and others), the vampires could extend their dominion over greater and greater lengths, and still have enough military strength to protect the borders. Over time, she gained enough support such that she could stage a coup against the rest of the party. With years of research on her own, she developed a formula that could instantly render a vampire unconscious. With this new weapon, she incapacitated the party, took control of empire, and ordered the immediate execution of the previous rulers. The unconscious lot was to be immersed in a rushing river, and their remains washed away from the empire.
